Safe laboratory working

To work safely in the lab you'll need to know the specific risks associated with the work you're undertaking.

This information will be provided to you at the start of each practical class, where you'll be advised on specific risks and informed of the appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) that's required for that specific class.

PPE will consist of a white lab coat and goggles as a minimum for all ‘wet’ practical classes. Other items of PPE will be made available as appropriate, eg gloves.

You are strongly advised to pay careful attention to the safety information provided. If you arrive late to a class and miss the safety talk you won't be allowed to take the class until you've been briefed on all relevant safety matters.

Sharps

You may need to use sharps (scalpels, blades, needles, etc) for certain practical classes.

Particular care must be taken when sharps are being used, and especially when they are being disposed of.

To avoid risk of injury to others, sharps waste must never be placed into a bag.

Appropriate sharps bins will be provided for you to use.
